Ms. Angella Tusiime (graduate) receives the Chief Justice Prize for Best Overall student at Bar course from Hon. Justice Katureebe
The\r\nChief Justice of Uganda, His Lordship Hon. Justice Bart Katureebe urged young\r\nlawyers to uphold and observe high ethical standards while they endeavor to\r\nserve justice. He noted that successful lawyers must anchor their work on\r\nethical practices and defend it at all times regardless of the other pressures.
He\r\nmade the call while presiding over as chief guest at the 43rd Law Development\r\nCentre (LDC) on\r\nFriday where at least 870 law students graduated with Post\r\nGraduate Bar course, Diploma in law and Diploma in Human Rights.
"In\r\norder to stand out in the legal profession, you must keep the standards of\r\nbeing honest, professional, competent and ethical no matter which capacity you\r\nserve in. Bear in mind that compromising your ethics comes with a cost because\r\nsomeone is certainly watching,” the Chief Justice told the graduates.
"Some\r\nlawyers only care about winning cases the clients even if it means obtaining\r\nevidence illegally or hiding it. But this affects your career in the long term.\r\nYou could fail to be appointed to high positions if this is discovered.”
Hon.\r\nJustice Katureebe further stressed that outstanding lawyers pay keen attention\r\nto detail in addition to prior and thorough preparation for their cases.
He\r\nspoke against the tendencies of lawyers interfering with their clients’\r\nresources or taking instructions and money from both sides.
"Law\r\nis about service. Therefore you must give back to the society by helping\r\nthose in need through working pro bono. Volunteer to offer para-legal services\r\nto victims of social injustice.”
Mr. Francis\r\nGimara, the newly elected President of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) encouraged\r\nthe graduates to work towards leaving a strong legacy in the legal profession.
